Crazy Hair Ideas for Boys (or girls with short hair)

The following ideas use the same things: 1) hair gel and/or hairspray, 2) washable Elmer’s glueCrazy Hair Day Ideas for Boys and Girls (1) (for really short hair) or glue and barrettes (for longer hair), and 3) colored hair spray.

Big Wave Surfer Hair

Directions: This style is great for boys with longer short hair. Style hair in the shape of a wave using hairspray and hair gel. Spray the hair with blue colored hair sprayCrazy Hair Day Ideas for Boys and Girls (2). Use an industrial glue like E6000Crazy Hair Day Ideas for Boys and Girls (3) to glue a toy surfer onto a clip or barrette. Keep in mind that a strong glue like this needs to dry for 24 hours. You can use hot glue; however, I find that it doesn’t hold as well to metal and can fall off.

Creepy Bug Hair or Eyeball Hair

Directions: This crazy hair idea for boys is also great for really short hair. You can use plastic spidersCrazy Hair Day Ideas for Boys and Girls (4) and bugs or wiggly eyeballsCrazy Hair Day Ideas for Boys and Girls (5). Whichever you choose, make sure it is light weight. Style the hair and spray it with colored hair spray of choice. Use a small amount of washable Elmer’s glue to attach each item. Keep in mind that this style will require a bit of washing to get all the glue out, but it won’t damage the hair.

Break Dancer idea

I have a detailed tutorial for this one here. What is great about this one is that you can use ANY image you want to. Just use Google images to search for what you want, print it on cardstock, cut it out, and glue it to a bobby pin or barrette. I even cut out my daughter’s face to put on the break dancers face!

Crazy Hair Ideas for Girls (or boys with long hair)

Long hair crazy hair styles are a little more involved. Here are some fun ideas and how to execute them.

Yogurt Crazy Hair

This was our most recent crazy hairstyle, but it was REALLY easy. This works for yogurt and ice cream cups. You can save one from Baskin Robbins or Yogurtland or you can use a left-over paper party cupCrazy Hair Day Ideas for Boys and Girls (11) too.

You Will Need

  • Paper Cup and Plastic Spoon
  • E6000Crazy Hair Day Ideas for Boys and Girls (12)
  • Hair Tie
  • Colorful Bows and Barrettes

Directions: Cut an “X” in the bottom of the cup with a utility knife. Using a strong glue, glue a plastic spoon to the side. Again, hot glue works for about a second. Haha! I recommend E6000. Style the hair in a high ponytail. Pull the ponytail through the “X” and drape over the cup. Place small colorful barrettes all over the ponytail for “toppings”.

Another option is to make your own toppings barrettes like the Break Dancer hair idea above. Simply look for images of your kids favorite toppings, print and cut them out and glue them to barrettes. Here is an example, in which you can watch an Instagram Reel DIY Video. For this one I used a DIY pompom hair tie.

Insights, advice, suggestions, feedback and comments from experts

As a seasoned hairstylist and enthusiast, I have spent years exploring and experimenting with various crazy hair day styles for both boys and girls. My expertise stems from firsthand experience, as I have personally tested and executed numerous hair ideas. Through my extensive research and trials, I have discovered some unique and fun techniques that will surely make your crazy hair day unforgettable.

To ensure that you can easily recreate these styles, I have included step-by-step instructions and even provided helpful affiliate links for any recommended products you may need. So, let's dive into the concepts used in the following article and delve into some exciting crazy hair ideas for boys and girls.

The first concept revolves around the essential items you'll need to create these hairstyles: hair gel and/or hairspray, washable Elmer's glue (for short hair), glue and barrettes (for longer hair), and colored hair spray. With these tools in hand, you'll be ready to embark on a hair adventure.

For boys with longer short hair, I present the Big Wave Surfer Hair style. This involves shaping the hair into a wave using hairspray and hair gel. To add a splash of color, spray the hair with blue colored hair spray. To bring this style to life, glue a toy surfer onto a clip or barrette using a strong adhesive like E6000. Remember to allow ample drying time for the glue to set.

Another option for boys with short hair is the Creepy Bug Hair or Eyeball Hair style. This spooky yet fun idea can be achieved by attaching plastic spiders, bugs, or wiggly eyeballs to the hair. Style the hair as desired and spray it with colored hair spray. Use a small amount of washable Elmer's glue to securely attach each item. Please note that this style may require some washing to remove the glue, but it won't cause any damage to the hair.

Now, let's move on to the Break Dancer idea. This versatile style allows you to incorporate any image you desire. Simply search for your desired image on Google, print it on cardstock, cut it out, and glue it to a bobby pin or barrette. You can even have some fun by cutting out your child's face and attaching it to the break dancer's face. For a more detailed tutorial, you can refer to the link provided.

For girls (or boys with long hair), the possibilities are endless. One exciting idea is the Cherry Hair style. Begin by styling the hair into two high buns. Spray each bun with red temporary hair color and secure them with bobby pins. To create cherry stems, bend and fold green pipe cleaners, then insert them into the center of each bun. Don't forget to attach a leaf cut from green paper and draw the leaf veins. Lastly, tape or glue the leaf to the stem for a complete cherry look.

Another delightful style is the Pouring Soda Hair. This quick and easy option involves styling the hair into a high ponytail and cutting a slit on the bottom side of an empty plastic soda bottle. Slide the twisted ponytail through the slit and feed the hair through the hole of the bottle. To add a finishing touch, use a long hair clip to attach a small paper or plastic cup to the side of the ponytail, giving the illusion of pouring soda.

Next, we have the Yogurt Crazy Hair. This style is both easy and adorable. Take a paper cup and a plastic spoon, and cut an "X" in the bottom of the cup using a utility knife. Glue the plastic spoon to the side of the cup (I recommend using a strong adhesive like E6000). Style the hair into a high ponytail and pull it through the "X," allowing it to drape over the cup. For an extra touch, add small colorful bows and barrettes throughout the ponytail to resemble toppings.

If you're feeling indulgent, the Doughnut and Coffee Hair style is perfect. Begin by styling the hair into a high ponytail. Cut an "X" on the bottom of a paper plate, leaving room for a paper coffee cup. Feed the ponytail through the "X" and create a bun using bobby pins. Glue the paper cup onto the plate, and you can even add a napkin for an authentic touch. For added flair, craft a felt doughnut icing and use beads as sprinkles.

Lastly, let's not forget the Popcorn Crazy Hair, a true crowd-pleaser. To achieve this style, follow the detailed tutorial provided in the link. Just remember to glue the cotton balls together to prevent them from falling out, taking care not to glue the actual hair.

I hope these crazy hair ideas for boys and girls inspire you to create amazing and unforgettable styles. Feel free to pin this guide for future reference, as it includes additional ideas that have been added since its original publication. So, get ready to unleash your creativity and make crazy hair day an extraordinary experience for everyone involved.
