I spent a couple of hundred hours building a potato play through and the best thing I found for profitability is the Seed potatoe pack from DAZED. It's still a lot of work but the return is much better. I also used the waste potatoes from the pack to start a Pig food operation.

... bug. You have it set so your workers will buy seed as they use it. They will also do this for Lime, Fertilizer/Slurry/Manure, fuel..things that are ... get really really expensive if you're on a new save. Best bet is to disable that stuff and buy it as you need ...

Whenever I can’t finish another row without letting it get too low. Realistically you’d never get to low or you’ll start missing and get poor population. Most equipment works best with some seed in it rather than nearly empty.

The best option I always use, is to plow the field after every harvest. This reduces the chance of weeds coming up. when you directly seed, the weeds have a greater chance of growing. I play with Precision Farming and Weeds on.
