  • 7 oz ground beef (100g per 3.5 oz) lean
  • 2 tbsp beef broth fat free
  • 1/4 cup onion diced
  • 1/4 cup celery chopped
  • 1 tbsp garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp aminos
  • 1 cup beef broth fat free
  • 1/4 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/8 tsp glucomannan powder optional as thickener - AP

Mash Topping:

  • 2 cups daikon radish chopped
  • 1 1/2 tbsp water
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp glucomannan powder optional as thickener - AP

Instructions

  1. Place 1 tbsp of beef broth in a large sauté pan and cook ground beef until browned, breaking up any large pieces as it cooks. Remove from the pan and set aside.

  2. Add remaining 1 Tbsp of beef broth to pan and sauté onions and celery until soft- about 15 minutes. Stir frequently to cook evenly.

  3. Add garlic and tomato puree to the pan and stir.

  4. Add beef and 1 cup (originally recipe said 3 cups- verify it’s just 1) beef broth to the pan and bring to a boil.

  5. Add Braggs aminos and herbs and lower heat and simmer uncovered for 20 minutes.

  6. Discard bay leaves. If adding glucomannan powder, sprinkle lightly over the surface at this stage and stir.

  7. Scoop the cooked meat into a large ovenproof dish and set aside.

  8. Make the daikon mash by boiling the chopped daikon in a large pot of water. Cook for 15 minutes.

  9. Strain and mash using a blender or masher.

  10. Add remaining ingredients to the mash and stir to combine. If using glucomannan powder to thicken, sprinkle lightly over surface and stir.

  11. Scoop or pipe the mash on top of the beef then bake in a 350 degree F oven for 30 minutes or until the mash begins to slightly brown. Serve hot!

Recipe Notes

Other ideas:

- Ground turkey will also work well for this recipe.

-Divide the cottage pie into two oven proof ramekins for individually portioned pies.

-Use a stand mixer with a paddle attachment to mash the cooked daikon. Let the mixer run for about 5 minutes to really get the mash nice and fluffy.

- Leave out the glucomannan for LSP version.

    Made this last night and the filling was absolutely wonderful! Wasn’t crazy about the Daikon Mash though, it didn’t really whip up and the glucomannan made it gelatinous. I had some ground chicken to use up so subbed that in and used chicken broth, as I had that on hand as well. I will definitely be making this again in P3/P4, but will probably do mashed cauliflower at that point. Thanks for another great recipe! 🙂

        The Daikon Radish was delicious, I have never purchased it before so it was nice cooking with a new veggie. The second time I made it I boiled the radish in the Simple Girl Dry Bouillon for fun and I boiled it a lot longer. Since I had trouble getting the radish to a ‘mashed potato texture’ the first time, I tried adding about a TB of the broth water in to the blender and that seemed to help get the fluffiness I wanted.

        This recipe is good for the family too, my kids actually wanted this for dinner. I can’t wait to try the P3 recipes.

Oh good I’m so glad you like it- I’m usually not a radish person because I don’t care for spicy foods, but I was surprised at how mellow the radish becomes once cooked. perfect solution to getting more fluffiness too! If you like these recipes, you will be blown away by the P3tolife recipes – once you can incorporate fats and more variety it’s like a dream come true.

      Hi Lorena – the calories are always shown on the recipe- on mobile device it will be at the bottom of the recipe, and on desktop it will be to the right of the recipe. It’s 194 calories and contains the full protein serving and veggie serving for P2. Meaning you still have your fruit for that meal to eat as well!
