I love how this infographic honors both thinking styles as part of process. I naturally tend to fall on the creative/divergent side so I work to build my logical/convergent side as often as possible so if there are too many creative/divergent ideas, I can help balance and synergize.

Mahalo to Jacqui Hoover, President & COO, Hawaii Leeward Planning and Executive Director/COO, Hawaii Island Economic Development Board (HIEDB), for organizing the workforce development panel (and so much more) at the Hawaii Energy Conference. Thank you also to Maui Economic Development Board, Inc. staff for putting together this amazing conference of innovative thought-leaders. I learned so much and hope to continue to work with your organizations to increase awareness, partnership, and engagement. We will be hosting a Building Transformation Forum in Honolulu September 26th, 2024. If you have questions about the U.S. Green Building Council or the work we are doing in Hawai'i, please feel free to reach out to me directly sgabriel@usgbc.org. A hui hou!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting Matthew Bachman in real life after having first worked together in late 2023. At the time of our meeting, as I am pulling into the parking lot of Habitat for Humanity Maui, a flatbed truck carrying baby and child-care supplies for families, many still displaced by the wildfire in Lahaina, arrives. I walk in and hear Matt’s familiarly calm voice, taking the dual arrivals in stride, first talking to a staff member around the corner, then seeing me, introducing me to her, quick hug, takes care of helping the trucks, lets me know I am welcome to look around, then finding me, introducing me to the entire team — the whole time, being so completely humble about the work Habitat Maui is doing, not only for families impacted by this disaster, but to families impacted by all sorts of disaster, mostly man-made. Thank you (mahalo) to Matt, the team at Maui Habitat, and at Habitat for Humanity International’s affiliates on each of the islands, in the western region, in the US and globally, for prioritizing people, for reducing barriers to homeownership, helping build generational wealth, and for all the work you do every day. Thank you also for the wonderful tshirt with translated building terms in the Hawaiian language. A hui hou (until we meet again)!Ps: I forgot to take a photo to memorialize our meeting so I have added a photo of cuttings from Lahaina’s famously resilient banyan to represent work you are doing to care for (malama) the people and resources of Maui.

I met Dana Visse last year in preparation for a LEED Gold Plaque Presentation at the recently-renovated METRO Center in Portland, an adaptive re-use of a building that had originally been a Sears building. So excited to see her and others tomorrow in Portland to talk about that project and the overall green building policies and commitments made by our METRO Officials and staff. Will you be there?
